Roughie: Big Duke

Sportsbet – Gary Legg:

Race 7:
Best: Marmelo, Johannes Vermeer, Humidor.
Value: Big Duke

Betfair – The Betfair Insider:

Race 7:
BACK (WIN) WALL OF FIRE (IRE) – 2 units at $12 or more

Betfair – Race Assessment:

BACK (WIN) Marmelo – 50% of your total race outlay – to WIN (Stake 0.7% of your total bank if working from a dedicated betting bank.)
BACK (WIN) Johannes Vermeer – 35% of your total race outlay – (Stake 0.5% of your total bank if working from a dedicated betting bank.)
BACK (WIN) Big Duke – 15% of your total race outlay – (Stake 0.2% of your total bank if working from a dedicated betting bank.)

Betfair – Melbourne Cup Pedigree Analysis:

Almandin clearly on top for me. With an AAA grade pedigree, no questions around distance and his win in the JRA Trophy said he is in red hot form. Reckon he peaks here and just needs a half decent ride to be going very close.

Definitely going to be saving around Humidor, Marmelo, Libran and Amelie’s Star.

Unibet – Shaun Beirne:

Race 2: Invincibella
Race 3: If betting 10 units have 7 on Fox Hall and 3 on Ozi Choice
Race 4: If betting 10 units have 6 units on Sin To Win and 4 units on Yogi

Race 7:
My tips:
1. Marmelo
2. Rekindling
3. Johannes Vermeer
4. Humidor

Suggested Bets:
If spending 10 units on the race bet 6 units Marmelo, 3 units Rekindling and 1 unit Johannes Vermeer.

For the wider exotics, I would include numbers 3, 10, 11, 20, 24.

Sportsbet – Race Comments:

Race 1:
The two we have seen on gameday have both looked well above average. SETSUNA covered ground last week yet she was too strong. She didn’t smash the clock but has great will to win. QAFILA impressed at Caulfield off the tardy start easily beating Grand Challenge who then placed to Setsuna. Up to eleven debutantes and the pick of them off the trials/jumpouts for mine are YULONG MONOCEROS (had the better of HAVANA HEAT to my eye), ROOBEENA, LAKE DISTRICT GIRL and FARTHING WOOD.
Selections 2, 13, 11, 8

Race 2:
SPEED: 1 leads 13 with 2,3 handy. 5 next? MILES OF KRISHAN looks ready to fire, she found the line nicely at Caulfield against the males and she has a massive 7.5kg weight swing on HELL OR HIGHWATER from their clash earlier this year. Hell Or Highwater had a rare off day last start. INVINCIBELLA chased hard last week in track record time, she can win here. PYGMY had excuses last start. STORMSAREBREWING beat home Hell Or Highwater last time and is a Flemington winner. Overs? TAHANEE has beaten them both! ROCK AWAY is flying this prep.
Selections 8, 3, 5, 10

Race 3:
SPEED: 7 and 4 from 5 with 9,15 handy. 1 next? LAND OF PLENTY made an early move in a very fast-run G1 Rupert Clarke and was only beaten three lengths. He crossed the line with the Toorak Handicap winner Tosen Stardom, forget his last run! DIVINE QUALITY just couldn’t reel in MILWAUKEE at Sale, both were only second-up, Milwaukee meets her better at the weights today. DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR comes off two nice wins and is unbeaten at 1400m. He had BOGGOMS covered two starts back, that horse then ran well behind Steel Frost. That ties OZI CHOICE in. NEW UNIVERSE can win. FOX HALL also has a hope but draws out.
Selections 3, 4, 9, 12

Race 4:
SPEED: 3,6 & 9 (add 22 if here) go fwd. 4,11 & 20 handy? GRANDDUKEOFTUSCANY set a strong speed last time and held off all bar one, behind him was Kellstorm, Harlem, Venguer Masque and Melbourne Cup favourite Almandin. YOGI closed off quite well in that same race. SIN TO WIN went to 2400m for the first time at Caulfield and showed good fight to score with 57kg. BERISHA and FANATIC made ground in the Geelong Cup and that ties in through SETTLER’S STONE who had placed behind Sin To Win prior.
Selections 3, 2, 6, 5

Race 5:
Good race. PARET looks a very good talent. He beat a talented one impressively on debut and then cost himself a win at Rosehill when pig-rooting halfway up the straight! PROPERTY wasn’t far off some very fast older horses at Caulfield first up, they were just .3 off the track record. Back to own age group. NATURE STRIP flew late and just missed SAM’S IMAGE with pattern no help, that winner had Eptimum form. Eptimum won in fast time last weekend and is down to run in a G1 on Derby Day. PIRACY was beaten by another Coolmore hopeful Goodfella last start. PREZADO has a future! MADEENATY can win.
Selections 9, 8, 1, 6

Race 6:
SPEED: 2,6 lead 12,13 with 4,10 up there. 3 next? OUR CROWN MISTRESS worked early on a fast (sub-47 second first 800m) at Caulfield yet kicked on to score in quick time for the day. COUNTERPLAY blew the start that day, saved ground and closed off very nicely on a tough day for run-ons horses. Little between them. TORVILL and YULONG XINGSHENG come through the listed Reginald Allen in Sydney, both ran well. Touch Of Minx emerged from that race to run very well at Moonee Valley last week. WARRANTY is a nice filly, she beat a handy one last week and can run time/sectionals. LUQYAA was good fresh and then forgive her Caulfield run.
Selections 7, 2, 3, 6

Race 7:
16,24 frm 5,19 with 4,7,12,15 handy. It has become a race locals Vs Internationals, last year ALMANDIN flew the flag for locals touching off one of the raiders. AMELIE’S STAR was able to beat Almandin in Bart Cummings, forget her Caulfield Cup miss (her first ever staying defeat), Almandin ran well that race (his first staying defeat). VENTURA STORM my best roughie from locals. HUMIDOR can win but will he stay the 3200m? MARMELO is my top pick from said raiders his Caul Cup run was very good, 3200m suits much better! TIBERIAN has great form 2400m+. RED CARDINAL can win; JOHANNES VERMEER 3200m?
Selections 23, 5, 2, 4

Race 8:
SPEED: 11 ran along in lead last week. 7,19 go fwd. 1,3,5,9 & 17 handy, add 22 if here. Where to start? MAURUS should have gone close in Coongy, winner was then beaten narrowly in Bendigo Cup in record time. He has form around Group 1 horses. LIFE LESS ORDINARY drops sharply in trip, the Kingston Town run at 2000m when he made an early move is very good form for this. LUBITON led/won in track record time last week. PURE PRIDE had excuses last start, she looked super here prior and no reason to doubt her at 1800m. RADIPOLE and NOZOMI are hopes. So to TALLY, HE OR SHE and KIDMENEVER.
Selections 4, 10, 12, 11

Race 9:
DERRYN had little hope against pattern at Randwick last time, he has placed to Redzel at weight-for-age and beaten Global Glamour and Impending. He is down to run here Derby Day. FAATINAH was sound in fast time latest, prefer him over 1200m and he beat all bar Flippant in this race last year with 58.5kg. BIG MONEY trialled very well. CASINO WIZARD is Group 1 placed to Vega Magic. CALANDA had no hope fresh, she can win. QUATRONIC has beaten Deploy! Expect better from NANCY on dry ground. OCEAN EMBERS had not hope back to 1000m last time, this is more suitable. SO YOU TOO a hope but gate 2? I THOUGHT SO could be the best roughie.
Selections 2, 9, 3, 6

Race 10:
9,10 lead but 1,2,3,5,6,7,8,13 can all be handy so? FUHRYK was back to her best last time winning easily and running time. I don’t have an issue with her over 1400m but she does have 59kg. PEDRENA was super fresh and out to 1400m can see her turning tables on COOL PASSION (who has since run well in hot Tristarc Stakes) out to 1400m with relative weights advantage. ECKSTEIN is underrated, she was very good against the males last time. QUILATE beat a good field last time. WHITE MOSS is unbeaten dry! MISS GUNPOWDER has weight swing on Fuhryk. SWAMPLAND was good in that Tristarc. QUILLISTA also can win.
Selections 13, 11, 1, 5

Ladbrokes Race Comments:

Race 1:
A number of first starters in this one. QAFILA Came on strong in the end to win at only start at Caulfield. Will take a power of beating at the weights. SETSUNA Was run down on the line in the Gimcrack at Randwick before going one better at Moonee Valley. Well treated under the race conditions. ROOBEENA Tony McEvoy debutant and has not trialled. Market as guide. KARA’S HOPE Tim Martin debutant and has the benefit of a Rosehill trial. Watch the market.

Race 2:
INVINCIBELLA Was a beaten favourite last start at Moonee Valley but this looks a touch easier. Won her previous two starts at Rosehill and Randwick and does look in a race to suit TAHANEE Is back in grade after being well beaten in the Tesio last start at Moonee Valley. Drawn to get all the favours in the run from the gate and anticipating a sharp improvement. PYGMY Finished eighth last start at Moonee Valley but had excuses. Should race off the speed in a race with plenty of early pressure and drops in weight. Well placed. HELL OR HIGHWATER Can’t knock the form with three wins from nine attempts this campaign and has multiple wins at Flemington. A speedy type. Commands serious thought.

Race 3:
Looks likely to be hot speed early. DIVINE QUALITY Hasn’t missed a place in five starts and three times a winner. First go at 1400m the only query. Just has the run the trip out to be the one to beat. FOX HALL Beaten odds-on favourite at Moonee Valley last start when she didn?t quite see out the 1500m. Back to 1400m perfect but the wide barrier no help . Just needs some luck form the gate to be in the finish.DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR Winner of last two at Morphettville. Honest frontrunner. Solid claims. BOGGOMS Has placed in two runs from four this campaign and finished strongly to end up midfield last start at Caulfield. Rates highly with Dom Tourneur aboard. Expected to be a contender.

Race 4:
SIN TO WIN Can’t knock the form winning two in a row at Caulfield and Mornington. Will likely lead/box seat. Perfectly placed. SHERLOCK HOLMES Came on to finish midfield last start at Caulfield and gets out to preferred distance. Should race off the speed in a race with plenty of early pressure. Well placed. GRANDDUKEOFTUSCANY Was able to place at long odds last start at Flemington. Has good speed and drawn ideally. Commands respect. BERISHA Ran four lengths back from the winner last start at Geelong on a soft track and faces a rise in distance. Mark Zahra has had success aboard previously. Commands serious thought.

Race 5:
PROPERTY Finished in the middle of the pack last start in the Caulfield Sprint when resuming and won at Caulfield in only second-up attempt. Gets going late. The testing material.NATURE STRIP Looked good winning at Mornington on debut and worked home solidly at Moonee Valley last start. Still has scope for improvement at third career start and should be at nice odds. BANDIPUR Returns from six week let-up. Has been running well this campaign winning three times and placing in all other outings. Damian Lane a bonus. Hard to hold out.MADEENATY Finished in the middle of the pack last start at Moonee Valley and has two placings from four runs this prep. Has the speed to overcome an unfavourable draw. Hard to go past.

Race 6:
BOOROOJ Chasing successive wins after last start win following breaking maiden last start at Seymour on a soft track and rates highly with Mark Zahra aboard. Drops in weight. The testing material.COUNTERPLAY Came on strong when just beaten last start at Caulfield and has three placings from four runs this prep. Won two of three as a favourite. Winning chance.OUR CROWN MISTRESS Last start win at Caulfield took streak to three in a row. Has good speed. Genuine contender. LADY OF CREBILLY Last start winner to break maiden at Morphettville. Could race just off the speed and should run fitter for past attempts. Winning chance.

Race 7:
BIG DUKE: Runner-up in the Metropolitan three back before winning the St Leger at Randwick. Held up at a vital time in the Moonee Valley Cup. Expected to be right in the finish.
HUMIDOR: Stretched Winx in a record breaking Cox Plate last week. The 3200m is new territory but can’t be discounted after the Cox Plate effort.
ALMANDIN: Chasing back to back Melbourne Cup wins after an emphatic victory win last year. 4.5kg more this year has to be a query but is a top class stayer and a win wouldn’t surprise.
JOHANNES VERMEER: Hasn’t won beyond 2000m but hit the line strongly when third in the Caulfield Cup. The trip has to be a query but still one of the main hopes.

Race 8:
BROWN BEN Was a beaten favourite last start at Murray Bridge but was held up at a vital time. Previous form good enough for this including a win in the Tokyo City Cup at Morphettville two back. Drops 5kgs in the in the weights and expecting him to bounce back. TALLY Faded to finish sixth last start at Flemington but big drop in distance should suit. Placed in four of six at the track before. At least a place chance here. KIDMENEVER Faded to finish 14 lengths off the winner last start in the Herbert Power Stakes when resuming but does best work over this trip and did have excuses last start. Has the speed to overcome a very wide draw. Hard to go past. LUBITON Strong in winning last start at Moonee Valley. Honest frontrunner and three wins from six attempts this campaign. Go well.

Race 9:
FAATINAH Placed last start in the Caulfield Sprint. Should look to roll forward and up in trip. Leading hope. CRYSTAL DREAMER Finished worse than midfield last start in the Caulfield Sprint. Likely to race on the speed and Damian Lane a bonus. Right in this. DERRYN Never in the race last start at Randwick. Should race off the speed in a race with plenty of tempo and gets going late. Serious player. I THOUGHT SO Narrowly beaten as a favourite last start at Randwick and has two placings from three runs this prep. Down in weight. Serious player.

Race 10:
Looks a toss up between the top two selections. COOL PASSION Unwanted by the market but right up there last start in the Tristarc Stks. Has won at Caulfield and placed twice this prep. Should race on the speed. Rates as one of the key chances. QUILISTA Narrowly beaten as a favourite last start at Geelong on a soft track. Winner at Caulfield and placed twice this campaign. Honest frontrunner. Among the main chances. ELLICAZOOM Faded from front position to finish just off the winner last start at Geelong on a soft track. Should race on the speed and carrying less weight. Winning chance. FUHRYK Won last start at Caulfield and rates highly with Craig Williams aboard. Regarded as a strong finisher. Right in this.
