Commentary

Serbia opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Costa Rica. It was a scrappy, tight counter until Aleksandar Kolarov’s superb free kick in the 56th minute. After that Serbia looked very comfortable as Costa Rica failed to record another shot on target until the 91st minute. Serbia will know that a win against Switzerland would guarantee progression to the Round of 16, but on paper that won’t be easy against the 6th best team in the world.

Switzerland began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against the highly fancied Brazil. They had to come from behind to do so, which is a great result with fixtures against the less fancied Serbia and Costa Rica coming up. Switzerland have now lost just 1 of their last 23 fixtures (16-6-1 record), with their sole defeat coming against Portugal during qualifying.

Both sides will know that a defeat will put their campaign severely on the back foot, while a draw probably won’t be the end of the world. For this reason I’m expecting a low scoring, cagey affair, with neither side wanting to open themselves up too much. An interesting stat for Switzerland is they have kept a clean sheet in the first half in 15 of their last 18 fixtures, while they scored first half goals of their own in just 2 of their last 8 games. Given Switzerland’s impressive run of just 1 defeat in 23 fixtures, I fancy them at +0.5 in the Asian Handicap market at 1.54 (Betfair). Under 2.5 goals at 1.56 (Betfair) also appeals, given the majority of Switzerland’s recent fixtures against sides ranked 30 or better went under this total. With both sides probably looking to keep things tight, and Switzerland’s penchant for scoreless first halves, I will also opt for under 0.5 in the first half market at 2.43 (Unibet).
