To take advantage of the odds before they possibly shorten, these previews are usually published before the team sheets are announced. Those who are more risk-averse should wait for the squad lists before wagering.

Moana Pasifika

Moana Pasifika vs. Highlanders

Highlanders

Under 64.5 at 1.91 (bet365)

Moana Pasifika have averaged 64.0 total points per game this season, however the Highlanders have averaged just 52.7 points per game. All six previous meetings between the two sides went under the bookmaker’s total (56.67 average) and all six meetings went under 63.5. Spanning this season and the last, the Highlanders’ last six away games went under the total. Rain is forecast in the Auckland region for Thursday and Friday, which could put a dampener on the scoring.

Hurricanes

Hurricanes vs. Reds

Reds

SGM: Hurricanes to win and Under 70.5 at 1.56 (betr)

The Hurricanes have won five in a row at home, and with the data set I have at hand, they have won their last eight home games against the Reds. Both home and away, the Hurricanes have won ten in a row against the Queenslanders. Five of the Hurricanes’ six home games went under the bookmaker’s total over the last twelve months. The Reds have the league’s lowest average total score of 45.6 this season, which has seen four of their five games go under the bookmaker’s total.

Blues

Blues vs. Fijian Drua

Fijian Drua

Blues 13+ at 1.43 (bet365)

The Blues have gone 5-0 as the home favourite over the last twelve months. Thee Aucklanders have covered the line in their last six home games as well as their last six games, both home and away. Over the last twelve months, five of their six home wins were by 13+ margins. Since the Fijian Drua entered Super Rugby their away record is an appalling 1-30. Spanning this season and the last, they failed to cover the line in their last six away games. Over the last twelve months, all four of their away games resulted in 13+ defeats. All five of the Drua’s previous five games against the Blues resulted in 13+ defeats and their last three defeats to the Aucklanders were by 24+ margins. The 13+ odds quoted above might not last. The Blues 13+ selection was at 1.35 odds with another major bookmaker at the time of writing. Those looking for more risk should consider the Blues -20.5 at 1.91 (bet365).

Force

Force vs. Chiefs

Chiefs

1st Half Line: Force +6.5 at 1.95 (bet365)

The Force have been fast starters this season. They dominated the first half but somehow trailed at the break against the Brumbies in Round 1. Since then they led at halftime against the Blues, Moana Pasifika, Highlanders and Hurricanes. They will be well rested following their bye, while the Chiefs have lost lock Tupou Vaa’i, centre Daniel Rona, and outside back Lalakai Foketi to injury last week. I’m not prepared to back the Force to win at fulltime, however, given they failed to cover the line in their last four home games and they have lost eight in a row to the Chiefs. The Chiefs blew a 17-point lead last week to lose to the Brumbies, but the Hamilton side has gone 5-0 in the head-to-head and 4-1 at the line on the back of a defeat over the last twelve months. Those looking for more risk should consider the following SGM: 1st Half Line: Force +6.5 / Chiefs to win at 2.80 (bet365).
