Commentary

Denmark got their campaign off to an excellent start with a 1-0 win over Peru. On paper Denmark and Peru will be fighting for 2nd place in the group, so the 3 points were critical. There was an element of good fortune in the result, however, as Peru failed to take any of their numerous chances, including a missed penalty. To be fair, though, Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel had an excellent game. Denmark have now gone five matches without conceding a goal and are unbeaten in 14 games. They continue to rely heavily on Christian Eriksen, however. In his last 14 appearances Eriksen has been involved in 17 goals: 12 of his own plus 5 assists. If he’s kept quiet or gets injured then Denmark will find themselves in trouble. In team news, midfielder William Kvist will miss this clash due to injury.

Australia began their campaign with a valiant 2-1 defeat to France. The Socceroos’ defence frustrated the French, with both of France’s goals involving some good fortune. The first was a controversial penalty involving a borderline VAR decision and the second involved Paul Pogba’s effort being deflected, which looped the ball over Mat Ryan and off the underside of the crossbar for an Aziz Behich own-goal. There was an element of luck in Australia’s goal too, it has to be said, with Samuel Umtiti inexplicably handling the ball to concede a penalty. Apart from that they only managed one shot on target. Australia always knew that on paper their best chances of results lay against Denmark and Peru, so they can take heart from their competitive performance against France. While Australia doesn’t boast the strongest of squads, they are led by shrewd head coach Bert van Marwijk, who boasts a lot of experience at this level and will no doubt make them a tough side for Denmark to break down. Australia will be wary, however, that they have a poor 1-1-7 record against European sides in the World Cup and they have only kept one clean sheet in their 14 previous World Cup matches, which was back in 1974.

This is a tough match to predict. Denmark’s games have been noteworthy for their clean sheets, but Australia have been held scoreless in just 2 of their last 10 games and they’ve scored against each of their last five European opponents. I’m going to stay clear of goal markets and instead focus on the match outcome. Given Denmark are unbeaten in their last 14 games, I will side with them, but I’m opting for the Draw No Bet market given Australia have lost just 2 of their last 10 games.

Betting tip: back Denmark in the Draw No Bet market at 1.42 (Unibet)
