Commentary

Australia’s World Cup hopes remain alive after they drew Denmark 1-1 following their 2-1 defeat to France. They sit 3rd in Group C with a -1 goal difference, while Denmark are 2nd with 4 points and a +1 goal difference. If Australia can beat Peru and France beat Denmark, then Australia could finish as the runners up, depending on how the tie breaking rules play out. All they can do, however, is focus on this match and try to get 3 points. After arguably being hard done by in the VAR review against France, Australia were the beneficiaries of a VAR handball call against Denmark. So far both of Australia’s goals have come from Mile Jedinak at the penalty spot. Australia have struggled to finish their chances in front of goal, but against Denmark they looked at their most dangerous when 19-year old Daniel Arzani was brought on late. It will be fascinating to see whether his eye-catching performance earns him a spot in the starting line-up. In other team news, Andrew Nabbout has been ruled out for the tournament with a shoulder injury. When Nabbout came off against Denmark, head coach Bert van Marwijk brought Tomi Juric on rather than veteran Tim Cahill, for which he as received criticism. It will be interesting to see if Cahill gets any game time in this fixture.

Peru have been eliminated from the World Cup following 1-0 defeats to Denmark and France. They will be left to wonder what could have been after arguably doing enough to warrant a draw in both fixtures. They missed a penalty against Denmark and after conceding against France in the first half they went down swinging in the second, but were unable to find the equalizer that would have kept them in the tournament. Peru will be a tough nut for Australia to crack, having kept 8 clean sheets in their last 12 fixtures.

Australia have worked incredibly hard this tournament but they have suffered from lacking a consistent goal scorer. They have yet to score from open play and they take on a Peruvian defence with good credentials. Peru haven’t conceded more than a goal in any of their last 16 games, so if they do score, Australia will be hard pressed to score twice to get the win. In Australia’s favour, however, is the fact that Peru have nothing to play for in this clash. Either way, I expect this to be a low scoring game. Neither side has yet to score from open play this tournament.

Betting tip: back under 2.5 goals at 1.82 (Betfair)

As a side bet, given the use of VAR has increased the number of penalties in this World Cup, there’s value in backing Mile Jedinak at 5.25 (Unibet) in the anytime goalscorer market given he’s Australia’s penalty taker. Jedinak has scored 14 goals in his last 26 appearances for the Socceroos. For a bit of fun, if he’s used as a substitute, Daniel Arzani is available as the last goalscorer at 14.00 (Sportsbet).
