To take advantage of the odds before they possibly shorten, these previews are usually published before the team sheets are announced. Those who are more risk-averse should wait for the squad lists before wagering.

Hurricanes

Hurricanes vs. Force

Force

Over 58.5 at 1.91 (bet365)

This game will be played at McLean Park in Napier, a venue where the Hurricanes have averaged 70.0 total points per game with the data set I have at hand. The last meeting in New Zealand between the Hurricanes and Force delivered 87 total points. The Force enter this game on the back of a 70-point game in Dunedin. The Hurricanes have averaged 61.7 total points per game this season, while the Force have averaged the league-highest 69.5 points per game.

Crusaders

Crusaders vs. Highlanders

Highlanders

Crusaders in the head-to-head at 1.30 (Dabble)

With the data set I have at hand, the Crusaders have won 14 of their last 17 home games against the Highlanders. The southerners have gone 0-6 away from home over the last twelve months. Spanning this season and the last, they bring 2-8 form into this game. The Highlanders won last week, however they have gone 0-2 on the back of a win over the last twelve months. The Crusaders lost last week, but they have gone 3-1 both in the head-to-head and the line on the back of a defeat over the last twelve months. The Highlanders upset the Crusaders 25-23 in Round 1, so there will be an element of revenge in this game. It is unlikely that the Crusaders will start their key All Blacks from the bench like they did in the season opener. You have to go back to 2015 for the last time that the Crusaders lost to the Highlanders twice in the same season.

Under 55.5 at 1.91 (bet365)

The Highlanders’ last five away games went under the bookmaker’s total. The same can be said for their last three fixtures against the Crusaders. Those three games all went under 53.5 with an average of 42.7.

SGM: Crusaders to win and Under 55.5 at 2.40 (bet365)

This combines the above two selections.

Blues

Blues vs. Moana Pasifika

Moana Pasifika

Blues 13+ at 1.22 (bet365)

The Blues have gone 4-0 as the home favourite over the last twelve months. Four of their five home wins during this time were by 13+ margins. All eight of Moana Pasifika’s defeats over the last twelve months were by 13+ margins. Their average margin of defeat so far this season is 30.3. The Blues enter this game on the back of a 16-point home win over the reigning champions Crusaders.
