BetEasy – Race Synopsis:

Race 2:
MUGATOO (7) took a good step forward last start when making light work of his rivals in the Listed Canberra Cup. Was very well treated at the weights there, but still won well and is clearly trending the right way. Sure to appreciate the step up in trip and should prove very hard to beat. YOUNG RASCAL (1) is a big watch in his Australian debut, no question he is more than capable on his form from the UK and has to be respected with Marquand booked. SUPERNOVA (9) closed off well first up when returning as a gelding and can improve sharply second up out to 2400m. FUN FACT (11) continues to race well, next best.

Race 3:
LUVALUVA (1) was in very good form before failing to fire in New Zealand when sent out favourite (9/4) in the Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes. Did have excuses there and she has since trialled well at Warwick Farm. Like her on the fresh side and she appears well placed despite giving weight away. GREYSFUL GLAMOUR (2) won well fresh before disappointing last start. Better than that and can bounce back in a big way. PAINT THE TOWN TWO (3) hits this on the up having won well at Flemington last start. Was big odds there (25-1) but they find JMac and she has to be respected. ALIFEROUS (4) is tracking well this time in and appears the next in line.

Race 4:
VERRY ELLEEGANT (5) took a good step forward in the Chipping Norton Stakes last start and appears set to peak racing third up. Back better than ever and is sure to appreciate the step up in trip. JMac sticks and she shapes as one of the hardest to beat. ADDEYBB (2) brings A1 form over from the UK having finished a close second behind Magical in the Champion Stakes. Rates very well off the back of that and looms as a major threat. AVILIUS (1) disappointed in the Australian Cup for the second year running, but will be out to bounce back in a repeat of last year. Have to respect his class. DANZDANZDANCE (6) the next in line.

Race 5:
TE AKAU SHARK (2) stamped himself a star last start when ultra impressive late taking out the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes. Form hasn’t quite worked out since, but don’t want to tie him down to his opposition. His closing sectionals were elite, he repeats, he wins. THE BOSTONIAN (3) had a dream run in the Canterbury Stakes last start and proved too good late. A stretch at the trip, but still has to be respected with JMac going aboard. SUPER SETH (7) has been rock solid in both starts to begin this preparation and while some query of a slight set-back, he still has to be respected. The champ HAPPY CLAPPER (1), next best.

Race 6:
SHADOW HERO (2) caught the eye late first up, before simply too good in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas. Beat home 6/12 rivals there and it’s hard to suggest he won’t be even better at 2000m. Does make it hard for his rivals, clearly the one to beat. SHERWOOD FOREST (4) sets up well back in trip having done a good to win the Group 1 NZ Derby last start. Beat two handy types there and measures right up. CASTELVECCHIO (1) has been okay in two runs back, gets out to his preferred distance now and should improve sharply, but he’ll need to. WARNING (3) is tracking well and is a big tick with Oliver going back aboard.

Race 7:
HANSEATIC (2) had his colours lowered in the Blue Diamond, however clearly no knock on that effort and the form from that Caulfield meeting has to be questionable. Six winners have since stepped out, all beaten. Plus we’ve already seen both Bivouac and Regal Power rebound in a big way off plain runs. Stable followed the same path with Lyre last year who ran third and confident he is a much better horse than her. Just needs even luck. FARNAN (3) is the benchmark in Sydney and will put himself into the race from outset. Out to emulate stablemates Pierro/Vancouver in winning the Silver Slipper/Todman en route to winning the Slipper. TAGALOA (1) beat Hanseatic in the Diamond, before an eye catcher late behind Farnan last start. Has a 1.8L margin to turn around, but he can. Reisling Stakes winner DAME GISELLE (9) the next in line.

Race 8:
COSMIC FORCE (15) was very good fresh when closing off well late behind Villami. They scorched the turf there and he should improve sharply racing second up. Extremely well placed down in the weights and has drawn to keep out of trouble. Group 1 Boss rides, he should take plenty of beating. PIERATA (1) is all class and only went down narrowly in this race last year. Likely to get back from the draw, but will be very strong late. SAVATIANO (4) is back better than ever and should be right at her peak racing third up. Oliver is a key booking, she commands respect. Stablemate DEPRIVE (5) caught the eye late behind Nature Strip first up and has to be kept safe.

Race 9:
MANICURE (3) goes very well fresh and appears nicely set up with two trials under the belt. Bowman is a key booking and she has placed in 6/8 attempts over this trip. Drawn out, so will need some luck, but still should prove hard to beat. Stablemate RESIN (4) showed good improvement last start and should be right at her peak third up. Another drawn out, but should be strong late. INVICTUS SALUTE (9) continues to race well and has to be respected, while SEASONS (10) also holds claims on best form. Race certainly doesn’t end there!

Sportsbet – Race Comments and Selections:

Race 2:
11 and 5 appear the only speed. MUGATOO is also in the G1 Ranvet later today and I sense is likely to take on that tougher option. An obvious choice if he does go around here. SUPERNOVA made a pleasing return and should be able to build on that here. He has matched up quite well against some of the more promising local stayers (Surprise Baby, Shared Ambition) and is weighted to advantage. RED CARDINAL has a solid Rosehill record and would be hoping the track doesn’t dry too much. One of YOUNG RASCAL’s early wins was over Mirage Dancer (a Caulfield Cup placegetter at his first Australian run) and around the same time he also beat former stablemate RAHEEN HOUSE.
Selections: 9. Supernova (Top Tip), 2. Red Cardinal, 1. Young Rascal, 11. Fun Fact

Race 3:
All mares, no fillies in this year’s Epona. Pace from 12 and 2 essentially, with 3 and 10 looking to be handy. SAVACOOL went winless last prep but she appears perfectly placed to break the drought in this 3rd-up. Clearly she has come back well but I concede she may need a few things to fall into placed from a double figure draw. PAINT THE TOWN TWO is flying through her grades down in Melbourne and she might secure a cosy enough run to see out a strong 1900m. Previous attempts around and beyond this distance have been scarce (but OK). GREYSFUL GALMOUR started much shorter than her last start and had a genuine excuse. She may bounce back strongly, although she has placed 1 of 9 in Sydney itself.
Selections: 6. Savacool (Top Tip), 3. Paint The Town Two, 4. Aliferous, 2. Greysful Glamour

Race 4:
Tempo very much up in the air in this one. Let’s look at notifications closer to the day because there will have to be some. Whatever ends up leading certainly won’t be doing it out of habit! VERRY ELEEGANT was close-up in the Chipping Norton but she can race keenly so I’d be wary of her leading. Looks well poised 3rd-up. AVILIUS won this easily last year and is not going poorly. ADDEYBB has some quality. MUGATOO is the low rater of the group but he is unquestionably on the up. That Canberra win wasn’t as easy as the famous one at Doncaster last May (check online if you haven’t seen it) but he had them easily covered now dives into a WFA G1. Think he could measure up?
Selections: 5. Verry Elleegant (Top Tip), 1. Avilius, 2. Addeybb, 3. Mugatoo

Race 5:
4 and 9 to lead from 8 and 1. TE AKAU SHARK is the headline horse and Verry Elleegant and Avilius may well have franked the Chipping Norton in the previous race. (Fierce Impact did the same last week in the All-Star Mile.) A large part of me hopes he can storm over the top but I am drawn to a couple of 3YOs to cause an upset. BRANDENBURG has quietly developed into a genuine G1 galloper and has been able to position close-up so far this prep. Will have the chance to do that here as well. SUPER SETH ventures to Sydney for the first time but he trialled nicely last week at Randwick. HAPPY CLAPPER won’t run poorly and I’m sure to throw something small at him at odds just in case.
Selections: 8. Brandenburg (Value Bet), 7. Super Seth, 2. Te Akau Shark, 1. Happy Clapper

Race 6:
Pace a little sketchy in the Guineas. 7 and 8 keenest to lead. SCORPZ got a long way back in the Derby but was one out/one back at Avondale so using this draw wouldn’t be a bad idea. I doubt there’s much between the NZers. When they settle together two back they finished together and it was only settling position that made the difference last start. SHADOW HERO produced a peak effort at Randwick and he should hold together here 3rd-up (as he did last prep when winning his G1 this trip). He needn’t get a mile back here and nor should CASTELVECCHIO whose 2000m runs have very very sound in defeat.
Selections: 2. Shadow Hero (Top Tip), 5. Scorpz, 1. Castelvecchio, 4. Sherwood Forest

Race 7:
FARNAN will want to cross right over the top I think but if he ends up outside another (maybe MAMARAGAN) that wouldn’t be a bad option either. He now boasts four dominant wins in his five starts and the margin over TAGALOA from the Todman could have been even greater. Balancing that out of course was TAGALOA going back to settle second last from an outside barrier there. Here he draws perfectly to set up sweetly in the bigger field. He’s a big threat but I have FARNAN rated $3.75 as the field is now so that’s a bet. MINHAAJ fifth pick but needs one more scratching to make it in. I have fillies like SEE YOU SOON, DAME GISELLE and PERSONAL all around or just over their right price so they must be factored in as well.
Selections: 3. Farnan (Best of the Day), 1. Tagaloa, 2. Hanseatic, 9. Dame Giselle

Race 8:
A terrific sprint this one. Main speed from 4, 6, 7, 8 (and possibly 15 and 17 if here). Firmly with PIERATA who settled up handy and coasted in his latest trial. Look for him at midfield and he can go one better than his nose 2nd to Nature Strip in this race last year. FASIKA was rock-solid as expected first-up. Think she’s a winning hope if she can cross handy with a minimum of fuss. And the mare she beat – I AM EXCITED, presumably at odds? – is a long way from the worst. I’ll be making her a winning for me. No great knock on any runner from Godolphin, including the returning KEMENTARI off a good trial.
Selections: 1. Pierata (Top Tip), 8. Fasika, 9. I Am Excited, 5. Deprive

Race 9:
All mares in the field proper. KIAMICHI the lone filly if she takes this option (which of course she needs a scratching to do) and she’s the obvious leader if she does so. Otherwise 9, 10, 12 and 17 to set the toner. STELLA SEA SUN is into the toughest race she’s ever gone near but she is weighted accordingly and could find a sweet run on the speed. At double figures I could be enticed into her. BANGKOK did enough for me first-up to consider her here. The quinella from that race take on the Galaxy and that’s relevant obviously for the likes of RESIN and INVICTUS SALUTE as well. Always respectful of JEN RULES but she does draw way out west here. Nice trial from her!
Selections: 17. Stella Sea Sun (Top Tip), 7. Bangkok, 9. Invictus Salute
